Sterling Houston (1945- 2006) was a prolific and innovative African American writer in San Antonio. During the twenty years he worked with JumpStart Performance Co. in San Antonio, he wrote thirty-three plays and received a number of local, regional, and national awards and grants demonstrating the appreciation of San Antonio and the national arts community. He joined JumpStart as a performer in 1986. By 1989, he was elevated to writer-in-residence. In 1990, he was the administrative director, and shortly thereafter the artistic director, a position he held until his death in 2006.
