Jubilee Theatre was founded by Rudy Eastman in 1981. Eastman’s goal was to entertain, but not without providing the audience a truth or lesson about life. Eastman’s signature productions included Negroes in Space, It Ain’t Grease, It’s Dixie Peach, and Brother Mac, an adaptation of Shakespeare’s Macbeth. The loss of Rudy Eastman in 2005 led to the short tenure of Ed Smith as artistic director. Smith directed stellar productions of plays by August Wilson and serious dramas such as Lynn Nottage’s Crumbs from the Table of Joy and Toni Morrison’s The Bluest Eye. In 2011, Tre Garrett replaced Ed Smith as artistic director; his debut piece was Lynn Ahrens’ and Stephen Flaherty’s musical Once on this Island.
