The Afro-American Players, Inc. (1970s), organized by University of Texas students GloDean Baker and Freddie Gardner, produced the popular musical Purlie based on Purlie Victorious by Ossie Davis. Baker and Gardner endeavored to raise socio-political awareness through theatre.
