The Black Academy of Arts and Letters (TBAAL) was founded by Curtis King in 1977. TBAAL has produced numerous gospel musicals and historical works. The gospel musicals were often touring groups with Tyler Perry in plays such as I Can Do Bad All by Myself, I Know I’ve Been Changed, and Madea’s Family Reunion. Historical works include Frank G. Greenwood’s Malcolm X: Reminiscences of Black Revolutionary, Hafferden’s Toussaint: Angel Warrior in Haiti, Babatunde’s Louis Armstrong: Before the Second Set, and Peter Bailey’s docudrama Malcolm, Martin, and Medgar. Memorable productions for TBAAL include Mad Woman Blues and Men, Money and Gold Diggers.
