Kathy Hornsby established the Hornsby Entertainment Theatre Company in 1993. Reverend Dr. Claude Black supported the theatre, formerly known as The Players in Christ, by allowing them to perform five-minute skits during Sunday service. To reach a wider audience and receive city funding, the Players in Christ changed their name to the Hornsby Entertainment Company. Hornsby established collaborations with the Davis Scott YMCA, St. Philip’s College, San Antonio College, the Josephine Theatre and the Carver Community Cultural Center. The group’s signature works include James Baldwin’s The Amen Corner, Charles Fuller’s A Soldier’s Play, Ntozake Shange’s For Colored Girls…, and August Wilson’s Fences.
